Wade Golliwog Figures Value Of

importance of green areas for human welfare. (Excerpt)

The following is an excerpt from a paper presented at the XI World Forestry Congress in Turkey, 1997. The authors are Kjell Nilsson and Thomas B. Randrup. At the end you can see the PDF of the complete work.

Kaplan & Kaplan (1989) have formulated a theory on the interaction between man's attention and the surrounding environment. This means that urban life with fast cars, neon signs flashing and strong colors, causing constant stress. Research indicates that vegetation and nature reinforce our spontaneous attention, allow our sensory system to relax and we infused fresh energy. Visits to green areas and relax us sharpen our focus because we only need to use our spontaneous attention. At the same time, we get fresh air and sunlight are important to our annual and diurnal rhythms. Furthermore, Ulrich (1984) showed that hospitalized patients recovered more quickly when they had a view through the window they could see trees.

Ulrich et al. (1991) projected to 120 people a bloody film about industrial accidents. Half of them were then screened a film about nature while the other half were projected one on the city, with scenes of buildings and traffic. The whole time was controlled stakeholders heart rate, muscle tension and blood pressure. All had strong symptoms of stress during the first film on industrial accidents. Stress levels half of those concerned, who watched the nature film, had returned to normal after 4 to 6 minutes, while half, who watched the film of buildings and traffic continued to show strong levels of stress.

In Sweden, Grahn has conducted extensive studies on the importance of parks for different population groups (Grahn, 1989). Studies show that, time spent outdoors had a real medical value to patients and residents of hospitals, nursing homes and nursing homes. People felt happier, slept better, needed less medication, I was less anxious and more talkative. On the contrary, unfortunately it was clear that the sick, elderly and disabled devoted surprisingly little time outdoors. This was only needed help to go outside.
